Why Yuvraj Singh Matters
Few Indian players have shaped two world titles as directly as Yuvraj. In 2007 his six sixes off Stuart Broad and 12-ball fifty gave India’s young T20 side belief in a format the country had barely played, and the title that followed helped make the IPL possible a year later. In 2011 he was India’s most complete player at the World Cup, scoring runs, taking wickets and winning four Player of the Match awards, all while carrying an illness he had not yet been diagnosed with. His public fight with cancer and his return to the national team changed how many Indians talk about the disease, and his YouWeCan foundation has kept that work going. Since retiring he has also become a mentor to younger Punjab batters who have since played for India.

Early Life and Family
Yuvraj was born in Chandigarh on 12 December 1981 to Yograj Singh, a former India fast bowler who later acted in Punjabi films, and Shabnam Singh. His father steered him firmly towards cricket from a young age, even though Yuvraj was also a keen roller skater as a boy. He came through Punjab’s age-group system, and his performances at the 2000 Under-19 World Cup, which India won, earned him a senior call-up within months.
Breakthrough: The 2000 ICC KnockOut in Nairobi
Yuvraj made his ODI debut against Kenya on 3 October 2000 at the ICC KnockOut Trophy in Nairobi. In his first innings, in the quarter-final against Australia, he scored a quick 84 that helped India knock out the world champions, and his fielding at point quickly became a talking point as well. He soon became a regular in the one-day side. His Test career took longer to settle, and he made his Test debut against New Zealand in Mohali in October 2003.

Playing Style
Yuvraj was one of the cleanest strikers of a cricket ball India has produced. A high backlift and a full swing of the arms let him hit straight and over long-on with little apparent effort, and he was at his most destructive against pace bowling in the final overs. Spin, especially on turning Test pitches, troubled him more, which is one reason his Test record never matched his limited-overs numbers. His left-arm spin was flat and accurate rather than big-turning, and captains used him to fill overs in the middle of an innings. In his early years he was also one of India’s best fielders, patrolling point and cover at a time when athletic fielding was rare in the side.
Life After Retirement
Yuvraj announced his retirement on 10 June 2019 and has since built a portfolio of roles off the field. He captained India Champions to the title at the first World Championship of Legends in 2024. Young India batters such as Abhishek Sharma have credited his mentoring for their development. In April 2026, as co-founder of the India Golf Premier League, he launched its 10 franchise squads in New Delhi. The same month he featured in a brand film for UAE developer BNW Developments, and in May 2026 he was named ambassador of Saudi Arabia’s new Dunes T20 League, which was scheduled to start in October 2026. He also backs FINO, a premium tequila label sold in India. In December 2025 the Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached assets reported at about ₹2.5 crore linked to him as part of its money-laundering probe into the 1xBet betting app, an investigation that also involves other former cricketers and actors; no finding of wrongdoing against him has been reported.
