Why Sourav Ganguly Matters
Ganguly took over the Indian captaincy in 2000, when the team was reeling from the match-fixing scandal, and changed the way it played away from home. He backed young players such as Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan, insisted on an aggressive attitude against stronger opponents, and left behind a side that believed it could win overseas. That legacy extends beyond his playing days: few Indian cricketers have moved as smoothly from the dressing room to the boardroom, and his career now spans captaincy, the BCCI presidency, an ICC committee chair and franchise coaching. For many fans in Bengal, he remains the face of the state’s cricket.

Ganguly was born on 8 July 1972 in Behala, Kolkata, to Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly. His elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, played first-class cricket for Bengal and later served as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal. Sourav came through Bengal’s junior system and made his ODI debut against the West Indies on 11 January 1992, but he was dropped after that tour and spent the next four years rebuilding his game in domestic cricket.
Breakthrough: Back-to-Back Centuries in England, 1996
Recalled for the 1996 tour of England, Ganguly made his Test debut at Lord’s on 20 June 1996 and scored a century. He followed it with another hundred in the next Test at Trent Bridge, announcing himself as a long-term member of the middle order. Within a few years he had also become Sachin Tendulkar’s regular opening partner in ODIs, forming one of the most productive opening pairs in the format.

Playing Style and Leadership
As a batter, Ganguly was at his best through the off side, where his timing and placement made him one of the most elegant left-handers of his era. He was also willing to step out and loft spinners straight, which made him dangerous at the top of an ODI innings. Short-pitched bowling troubled him at times, but his ability to score quickly against spin and to build long innings in Tests kept him valuable. As a captain, his strength was man-management and selection: he protected young players, demanded intensity and treated overseas tours as chances to win rather than to survive.
Current Role (2025-26) and Outlook
Ganguly returned as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal on 22 September 2025, giving him charge of Eden Gardens and Bengal cricket once again. In his first season as head coach of Pretoria Capitals, the team reached the SA20 final in January 2026 but lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape by six wickets. He also joined Tigers of Kolkata in the Indian Street Premier League as co-owner and mentor ahead of its 2026 season. On 6 October 2026, Delhi Capitals announced him as head coach for IPL 2027, extending an association with the franchise that began in 2019 and included a stint as director of cricket. He has repeatedly said he is not involved in politics.
