Breakthrough: From IPL Finisher to India’s Number Four
His domestic and IPL record took years to turn into an India call-up. After a single game for Mumbai Indians in 2012, he spent four seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders and won the 2014 title with them. Mumbai Indians bought him back in 2018, and over the next three seasons he became a reliable top-order run-scorer as the franchise won the 2019 and 2020 titles. He was picked for India in March 2021 and hit a six off the first ball he faced in T20I cricket, against England in Ahmedabad. By late 2022 he was the world’s top-ranked T20I batter.
