Breakthrough: A Junior World Record in Bydgoszcz
Chopra announced himself at the 2016 World U20 Championships in Poland, where his winning throw of 86.48 metres set a junior world record, a mark that made him one of the most talked-about young throwers in the world. The result brought him to the attention of foreign coaches and sponsors, and within two years he had added Commonwealth and Asian Games gold at senior level.
Neeraj Chopra Career Journey
Working with German coaches Uwe Hohn and Klaus Bartonietz, Chopra came back from elbow surgery in 2019 to win Olympic gold in Tokyo on 7 August 2021, India’s first in athletics. He followed it with world silver in 2022, the Diamond League title the same year and world gold in Budapest in 2023. At Paris 2024 he threw a season-best 89.45 metres for silver behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. Under Czech great Jan Zelezny he broke the 90-metre barrier in Doha in May 2025 and won the inaugural NC Classic in Bengaluru that July with 86.18 metres, but a back problem left him eighth at the Tokyo World Championships in September 2025, his first major miss in years.
