Why KL Rahul Matters
KL Rahul has become Indian cricket’s most adaptable batter. He opens in Tests, anchors the middle order and keeps wicket in ODIs, and is one of the IPL’s most consistent run-makers. That flexibility has made him indispensable through a period of transition, and his appointment as Test vice-captain in June 2026 reflected his standing in the dressing room. His 2025 tour of England, where he opened against the moving ball and scored two hundreds, answered long-standing questions about his consistency. In October 2026 he became the 15th Indian to reach 10,000 international runs, confirming him as one of the senior figures of India’s Test side after the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Early Life and Family
Rahul was born in Bengaluru on 18 April 1992 to KN Lokesh and Rajeshwari, both academics. His father is a former director of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka, and his mother taught at Mangalore University. He grew up in Surathkal near Mangaluru, began formal coaching at about the age of 10, and moved to Bengaluru at 18 to study at Jain University.
He has played domestic cricket for Karnataka since 2010 and was part of India’s squad at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. In the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy he made 337 against Uttar Pradesh, the first triple century by a Karnataka batter.
Breakthrough: From Ranji Runs to the Boxing Day Test
The groundwork was laid in domestic cricket. In 2013-14 Rahul scored more than 1,000 Ranji Trophy runs as Karnataka won the title, a season that put him firmly on the selectors’ radar, and Karnataka retained the trophy the following year. His Test debut came at the MCG on Boxing Day 2014, where he struggled against a hostile Australian attack and was briefly written off. He responded in his very next Test with 110 at Sydney, a patient innings that showed the temperament to go with his technique. That ability to recover from a poor start became a theme of his career, and by the end of 2016 he had become the fastest batter to centuries in all three international formats.

At Lord’s in 2021 he made 129 to set up a famous India win, and that December his 123 at Centurion laid the foundation for India’s first Test victory at the ground. In white-ball cricket, his most important knock may be the unbeaten 97 against Australia in Chennai at the 2023 World Cup, when he walked in at 2 for 3 and saw India home. Only weeks earlier, back from thigh surgery, he had marked his return with 111 not out against Pakistan at the Asia Cup.
He kept wicket throughout India’s 2025 Champions Trophy win and finished unbeaten in the final. On the 2025 England tour he scored 137 at Headingley and 100 at Lord’s, and in IPL 2026 he struck an unbeaten 152 off 67 balls against Punjab Kings, the highest IPL score by an Indian.

Batting Technique and Method
Rahul’s technique is among the most orthodox in Indian cricket. He stands tall with a still head and plays the ball late, which is why he has been so effective against seam and swing in England and South Africa. His judgement of what to leave outside off stump is excellent, and a strong back-foot game, especially the punch through cover and the pull, gives him scoring options against short bowling. The criticism has rarely been about method but about tempo: he can become becalmed in T20 cricket and has sometimes fallen in Tests after doing the hard work. As an ODI wicketkeeper-batter at number five, his calm in the middle overs gives India balance.
Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook
At 34, Rahul is in the best run of his career. He scored Test hundreds against West Indies in October 2025 and Afghanistan in June 2026, was Delhi Capitals’ leading run-scorer in IPL 2026 with 593 runs, and was named Test vice-captain. In the third ODI against West Indies at New Chandigarh on 3 October 2026 he made 129 not out off 87 balls, his ninth ODI century, to pass 10,000 international runs, although West Indies chased down 352 to win by five wickets. The tour of New Zealand is next.
