Why Suryakumar Yadav Matters
Suryakumar changed what Indian selectors and fans expect from a number-four batter in T20 cricket. He arrived in international cricket at 30 and within two years was the world’s top-ranked T20I batter, proof that a late starter could still dominate. As captain he kept India’s aggressive approach going after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from T20Is. Under him India won 42 of 50 completed T20Is, according to Reuters, and became the first men’s side to retain the T20 World Cup. His removal three months after that win shows how quickly form now outweighs reputation in the format.

Early Life and Family
Suryakumar was born in Mumbai on 14 September 1990. His family has roots in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. He first learned the game under his paternal uncle in Varanasi, and after moving to Mumbai he joined a camp in the BARC colony at about the age of ten. He later trained at the Elf Vengsarkar Academy. He studied at Atomic Energy Central School and completed a commerce degree at Pillai College in Mumbai. He made his debut for Mumbai in List A cricket in 2010.
Breakthrough: From IPL Finisher to India’s Number Four
His domestic and IPL record took years to turn into an India call-up. After a single game for Mumbai Indians in 2012, he spent four seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders and won the 2014 title with them. Mumbai Indians bought him back in 2018, and over the next three seasons he became a reliable top-order run-scorer as the franchise won the 2019 and 2020 titles. He was picked for India in March 2021 and hit a six off the first ball he faced in T20I cricket, against England in Ahmedabad. By late 2022 he was the world’s top-ranked T20I batter.

Playing Style
Suryakumar’s game is built on angles rather than pure power. He gets low early, reads length quickly and uses the pace of the ball to send it fine on either side of the wicketkeeper, which is why he earned the label “Mr 360”. Because he scores where fielders rarely stand, captains struggle to set fields for him. That same reliance on timing and wrist work makes him vulnerable when the hands are not working freely, and the selectors’ reported concern over a wrist problem in 2026 fits a period in which his boundary options shrank.
Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook
After a long lean patch in 2025, he came back with 242 runs in five innings against New Zealand in January 2026, and then led India to the T20 World Cup title on home soil, scoring 242 runs in nine matches. India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the final in Ahmedabad. His IPL 2026 season was poor, with 270 runs at about 20.76 for Mumbai Indians. On 6 June 2026 the selectors named Shreyas Iyer T20I captain and left Suryakumar out of the squads for Ireland, England and the Asian Games, pointing to his form, amid reports of a wrist problem. He was also missing from the T20I squad for the West Indies series that began in late September. He was not in Mumbai’s squad for the opening Ranji Trophy round of 2026-27, and in October he returned to competitive cricket in the MCA President’s Cup, scoring 17 in his first innings. At 36, his route back depends on runs in domestic cricket and in IPL 2027.
