Why Smriti Mandhana Matters
Mandhana is the clearest sign of how far Indian women’s cricket has moved in a decade. She began in an era of few matches and little television coverage, and she is now the most prolific run-scorer the women’s international game has produced, ahead of Mithali Raj, whose career once defined Indian women’s batting. She scores quickly at the top of the order in all three formats, giving India a platform for bigger totals. She was the highest-paid player at the first WPL auction in 2023, and her commercial pull has helped convince brands that women cricketers can carry national campaigns. Taking over the captaincy at 30, she now has the job of turning a World Cup-winning side into a consistent force in T20 cricket as well.

Early Life and Family
Mandhana was born in Mumbai on 18 July 1996. When she was two, the family moved to Madhavnagar in Sangli, Maharashtra, where she grew up. Her parents are Shrinivas and Smita Mandhana. Both her father and her brother played local cricket, and following her brother’s matches drew her into the game. She played for Maharashtra’s age-group teams and made her senior domestic debut for the state in 2010.
Breakthrough: The 2017 World Cup and a Place at the Top of the Order
Mandhana made her India debut in April 2013, aged 16, and was part of the side that won a Test in England in 2014. Her profile rose at the 2017 Women’s World Cup in England, where she scored 90 against the hosts and an unbeaten century against West Indies in India’s first two games. India reached the final that year. In 2018 she was named ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year, and from then on she was a fixture at the top of India’s order in every format.

Playing Style
Mandhana is a classical left-hander who scores most of her runs through the off side. Her cover drive and punch through point are her signature shots, and she leans on timing rather than power, which lets her score quickly without slogging. Over the past three years she has added more lofted hits over the leg side and against spin, and that has lifted her T20 strike rate. The old criticism was that she gave starts away; her run of centuries since 2024 suggests she now converts far more of them.
Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook
Mandhana’s form across 2025-26 has been among the best of her career. At the 2025 World Cup she made 434 runs at 54.25, including a century against New Zealand, and shared a 100-run opening stand with Shafali Verma in the final, which India won by 52 runs against South Africa on 2 November 2025. In February 2026 she scored 87 off 41 balls as RCB chased 204 to beat Delhi Capitals in the WPL final, and she finished as the league’s top run-scorer. The T20 World Cup in England in June and July was a disappointment for India, who went out in the group stage, although Mandhana made 205 runs. She returned to form in September with 124 off 64 balls against Hong Kong at the Asia Cup, the innings that took her past Mithali Raj, and 79 off 45 balls in the Asian Games final against Sri Lanka, which India won for gold. After Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down on 6 October 2026, the BCCI named Mandhana captain across formats. Her first series in charge is at home against Zimbabwe from 16 October.
