Why Harmanpreet Kaur Matters

Harmanpreet’s place in Indian cricket rests on two moments eight years apart. Her unbeaten 171 against Australia in the 2017 World Cup semi-final, scored in a rain-shortened game, showed a domestic audience that an Indian woman could overpower the world’s best side, and it is widely seen as the innings that pushed broadcasters and sponsors towards the women’s game. In 2025 she finished the job as captain, joining Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as the only Indian captains to lift the 50-over World Cup. Between those points she led India in more than 150 T20Is, a record for any captain, men or women, and guided a team that moved from occasional upsets to regular wins over the top sides.

She joined Indian Railways in 2014, which took her to Mumbai.

Breakthrough: The 171 Not Out at Derby

Harmanpreet made her ODI debut against Pakistan in March 2009 and her T20I debut against England at the World T20 that June. She was a useful player for several years, but the turning point came on 20 July 2017 in the World Cup semi-final against Australia. She scored 171 not out off 115 balls, still the highest score by an Indian in a Women’s World Cup and the highest in a women’s World Cup knockout match. India won and reached the final. The following year she became the first Indian woman to score a T20I century, with 103 off 51 balls against New Zealand.

Playing Style

At her best, Harmanpreet is a power hitter who clears the leg side against both pace and spin, and her sweep and slog-sweep make her dangerous through the middle overs. Her big innings tend to come in pressure games, as her knockout record shows. Her T20I average of around 30 reflects long patches of inconsistency in the format, even though her best innings have been match-winning. With the ball she offers useful off-spin, with 75 international wickets. As captain she was instinctive and willing to back young players.

Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook

The 2025 World Cup was the peak of her captaincy. She made 89 in the semi-final chase of 339 against Australia, sharing a 167-run stand with Jemimah Rodrigues, and scored 20 in the final before taking the catch that sealed a 52-run win over South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium on 2 November 2025. The 2026 season was mixed. India went out in the group stage of the T20 World Cup in England in June and July, a tournament in which she played her 200th T20I. In September she led India to the Women’s Asia Cup title in the UAE and then to Asian Games gold in Japan, beating Sri Lanka in the final. On 6 October 2026, a day after meeting BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, she announced on Instagram that she was giving up the captaincy in all formats, saying she felt the team was in a good place. She has confirmed she will continue as a player. Smriti Mandhana succeeds her.
