Debut and Overnight Stardom (1988–1990)

Salman made his debut in a supporting role in Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988). A year later, Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) made him a star. He played Prem, and the role won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. The film became one of the biggest hits of its time.

The 1990s: Romantic Hero and Family Favourite

Through the 1990s he delivered a string of hits: Saajan (1991), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Judwaa (1997) and Biwi No.1 (1999).

His supporting role as Aman in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. The following year, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) earned wide praise.
