Why Viswanathan Anand Matters
When Anand became India’s first grandmaster in 1988, the country had almost no chess infrastructure at the elite level. Nearly four decades later, India has dozens of grandmasters and, in D. Gukesh, a reigning world champion, and much of that growth traces back to the example Anand set and the support he later gave. He is also one of the few players to have won the world title in knockout, tournament and match formats, which makes his record unusually complete. Through the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy and his work at FIDE, he has turned that playing legacy into a lasting influence on how the game is run and taught.

Early Life and Family
Anand was born on 11 December 1969 in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, and grew up in Chennai. His mother, Susheela, introduced him to chess when he was a young child, and he spent part of his childhood in Manila, where his father’s work took the family. He became known for the speed of his play, which earned him the nickname Lightning Kid in his early years.
Breakthrough: World Junior Champion and India’s First Grandmaster
Anand’s rise came quickly in the late 1980s. In 1987 he became the first Indian to win the World Junior Championship, and the following year he was awarded the grandmaster title, the first player from India to achieve it. By the early 1990s he was beating the world’s leading players, and in 1995 he challenged Garry Kasparov for the PCA world title in New York.
Viswanathan Anand Career Journey
Anand won the FIDE knockout championship in 2000 and first reached world No. 1 on the FIDE list in April 2007, spending 21 months at the top in total. Later in 2007 he won the world championship tournament in Mexico City, then defended the title in matches in 2008, 2010 and 2012. After losing to Carlsen in Chennai in 2013 and Sochi in 2014, he scaled back his schedule but remained in the world’s top group for years. He was elected FIDE Deputy President in August 2022.

Playing Style
Anand’s chess has always combined speed with depth. In his early career he relied on intuition and quick calculation, which made him exceptionally strong in rapid and blitz. As he matured, he added some of the most thorough opening preparation in the game, using computers and a dedicated team long before that became standard. His style is universal rather than narrowly aggressive or defensive: he can steer games into sharp tactical positions or grind out small endgame advantages, depending on the opponent. That adaptability is a large reason he stayed near the top through several generations of rivals.
Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook
Anand now plays selectively. In January 2026 he returned to the Tata Steel India event in Kolkata as a player for the first time in six years and finished second in the rapid section, behind Nihal Sarin. Most of his time in 2026 has gone to administration. After FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich suspended his duties in July 2026 following European Union sanctions, Anand served as FIDE’s interim president. At the FIDE General Assembly in Samarkand on 26 September 2026, Timur Turlov was elected president with Anand as his deputy for the 2026 to 2030 term. The next major event on the FIDE calendar is Gukesh’s world title defence against Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva, which begins in late November 2026.
