Why Rahul Dravid Matters
Dravid’s influence on Indian cricket runs through two careers. As a player he gave a stroke-making batting line-up the patience it lacked, and many of India’s landmark overseas Test wins of the 2000s, in England, Australia, Pakistan and the West Indies, came with him batting for long periods at number three. As a coach he did quieter but equally lasting work: in his years with India A and the Under-19 side he helped build the pipeline that produced much of the current national team, and as senior head coach he pushed India towards a more aggressive white-ball style that paid off with the 2024 T20 World Cup. Few people have shaped both the results of one generation and the development of the next.

Batting Technique and Coaching Approach
Dravid’s batting rested on a compact defence, a still head and late, soft hands that let the ball come to him. He left well outside off stump and was content to bat long periods without scoring, which wore bowlers down and set up innings for the stroke-makers around him. He could also adapt: in ODIs he kept wicket in 2003 to balance the side, and his only T20I included three consecutive sixes. As a coach he has been calm and player-focused, preferring clear roles and honest conversations to public criticism. After the 2024 title he reportedly declined extra prize money so that it matched what his support staff received.
Current Role
Dravid’s contract as India head coach ended after the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados. He then joined Rajasthan Royals as head coach for IPL 2025, but the side finished ninth with four wins from 14 games, and on 30 August 2025 the franchise announced he was leaving after he turned down a broader role in a restructure. He did not take an IPL job for 2026. On 15 March 2026 the BCCI gave him the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, its highest honour. In May 2026 he was announced as a co-owner of Dublin Guardians, part of an Indian consortium, in the European T20 Premier League backed by the boards of Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. Dublin, captained by R Ashwin, finished fifth of six teams in the first season, which ran from 26 August to 20 September 2026. In July 2026 he was linked in reports with England’s Test coaching job, which went to Stephen Fleming. As of October 2026 he holds no national or IPL coaching post, though he has said he remains open to coaching.
