Why Lakshya Sen Matters

Indian men’s singles has produced bursts of excellence, from Prakash Padukone to Kidambi Srikanth, but rarely a player who stays near the top across an entire Olympic cycle. Sen is the closest India has come to that in recent years. He has medalled at the World Championships, won Commonwealth gold, beaten a reigning world No. 1 and reached two All England finals before turning 25. His Paris 2024 run, the furthest an Indian man has gone in Olympic badminton singles, also showed how thin the line is between a breakthrough and a near-miss at that level, and why his progress toward Los Angeles 2028 is followed so closely.

Early Life and Family

Sen was born on 16 August 2001 in Almora, Uttarakhand, into a badminton family. His grandfather played the sport and his father, Dhirendra Kumar Sen, is a badminton coach; his elder brother Chirag Sen also played professionally. The family moved to Bengaluru so that the brothers could train at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, where Vimal Kumar coached Lakshya and Padukone mentored him from about the age of ten.

Breakthrough: Asian Junior Champion to World Medallist

Sen’s rise began in 2018, when he won the Asian Junior Championships, Youth Olympic silver and World Junior bronze. He won his first senior titles in 2019, including the Dutch Open and the Hylo Open. The real step up came at the 2021 World Championships in Huelva, where he won bronze on his debut at the event, and in early 2022, when he won the India Open and reached the All England final.

Playing Style

Sen is a quick, all-court player whose game rests on movement, defence and the ability to absorb pressure before turning rallies around. He is comfortable in long exchanges and often wins points by changing pace with deceptive drops and well-disguised net play rather than relying only on power. His main weakness has been closing out matches from strong positions, which cost him in the Paris bronze match and the 2026 All England final, and his team has worked with conditioning specialists to keep him fresh through deep runs.

Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook

Sen’s best result of 2026 came at the All England Open in March, where he beat world No. 1 Shi Yuqi in the first round, Li Shifeng in the quarter-finals and Victor Lai in a semi-final he finished while cramping, before losing the final 21-15, 22-20 to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-yi. He then helped India to Thomas Cup bronze. The rest of the season has been patchier: a second-round exit at the home World Championships in New Delhi in August, and at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya a team bronze followed by a second-round singles loss to Loh Kean Yew on 26 September. Ranked 14th, Sen has said he wants to choose his tournaments carefully as qualification for Los Angeles 2028 begins in 2027.
