Why D Gukesh Matters
Gukesh is the clearest product of India’s chess boom. For decades Viswanathan Anand stood almost alone at the top; Gukesh belongs to a wave of Indian teenagers, many of them trained in Chennai and supported by Anand’s academy, who now compete with the best in the world as a matter of routine. His title win in Singapore was also a statement about temperament. He was not the highest-rated player in the world, and his margin over Ding was a single game, but he won the Candidates and the title match by staying composed under pressure. His 2026 slump has added a new test: whether he can recover in time to defend the title.

Early Life and Family
Gukesh was born in Chennai on 29 May 2006 to a Telugu family. His father, Dr Rajinikanth, is an ENT surgeon who gave up his practice in 2017 to travel with his son to tournaments, and his mother, Dr Padmakumari, is a microbiologist. He learned chess at around seven, studied at Velammal Vidyalaya and stopped regular schooling after Class 4 to focus on the game. His early coach, GM Vishnu Prasanna, had him avoid relying on chess engines until he was rated above 2500.
Breakthrough: Grandmaster at 12 and Olympiad Star at 16
Gukesh became a grandmaster on 15 January 2019, aged 12 years, seven months and 17 days, then the second-youngest in history. His wider breakthrough came at the 2022 Chennai Olympiad, where he opened with eight straight wins on board 1 and took individual gold with 9/11. Later that year he crossed 2700, and in 2023 he overtook Anand as India’s top-rated player.
D Gukesh Career Journey
In April 2024 Gukesh won the Candidates Tournament in Toronto with 9/14, becoming the youngest winner of the event. He then led India to Olympiad gold in Budapest with an individual gold on board 1. In the title match in Singapore he trailed Ding after the first game, recovered, and won the decisive 14th game on 12 December 2024 to take the match 7.5-6.5. In 2025 he tied for first at Tata Steel before losing a tiebreak to R Praggnanandhaa, and at Norway Chess he recorded his first classical win over Magnus Carlsen on the way to third place. Playing Style
Gukesh is a calculating, ambitious player who is willing to keep tension on the board rather than settle for safe draws. His strength is deep, accurate calculation in complex middlegames and a readiness to play long games to the end, which he showed repeatedly in Toronto and Singapore. His weaker areas have been faster time controls, where his results have trailed his classical play, and, during 2026, a run of losses that suggested confidence as much as preparation was the issue.
Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook
2026 has been the hardest year of Gukesh’s career. He finished in the lower half at Tata Steel and the Prague Masters, came last at Norway Chess in May and June and last again at the Chennai Grand Masters in July, and slipped out of the world top 30. At the 46th Olympiad in Samarkand in September, playing on board 4, he won an individual silver medal and helped India to team silver, a modest but useful recovery that lifted his rating back to 2710 in the October list. His title defence against Javokhir Sindarov, who won the Candidates in Cyprus in April with 10/14 and is rated 2782, runs from 24 November to 12 December 2026 at the Fondation Martin Bodmer near Geneva. The match is scheduled over 14 classical games with a US$2.5 million prize fund, and Sindarov starts as the higher-rated player.
