Why Rohit Sharma Matters
Few Indian batters have changed the shape of an innings the way Rohit has. As an opener he moved India away from a cautious first ten overs towards early aggression, accepting the risk of getting out so that the batters after him could play with freedom. That approach defined India’s white-ball cricket under his captaincy and ended an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy at the 2024 T20 World Cup, followed by the Champions Trophy a year later. His career is also a story of late flowering: he spent six years as an inconsistent middle-order talent before a move to opening in 2013 unlocked the run-scoring that now puts him among the most productive ODI batters in history.

Early Life and Family
Rohit was born in Bansod, Nagpur, on 30 April 1987. Because his father’s income was limited, he was raised largely by his grandparents and uncles in Borivali, Mumbai, visiting his parents in Dombivli at weekends. In 1999 an uncle paid for him to join a cricket camp, where coach Dinesh Lad spotted his talent and helped him win a scholarship to Swami Vivekanand International School. He began as an off-spinner who batted low down; Lad pushed him up to open in school cricket. He made his first-class debut for India A in 2006 and scored a double century for Mumbai against Gujarat in his first Ranji Trophy season.
Breakthrough: From Middle-Order Puzzle to Record-Breaking Opener
Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast in June 2007 and was part of India’s winning squad at the inaugural T20 World Cup that September. For the next few years he drifted in and out of the side. The turning point came at the 2013 Champions Trophy, when he was promoted to open alongside Shikhar Dhawan and India won the title. Later that year he struck 209 against Australia in Bengaluru, his first ODI double century, and scored 177 on Test debut against West Indies at Eden Gardens. A year later, on the same ground, he made 264 against Sri Lanka, a record that still stands.

Rohit took over as Test captain in February 2022 and led India in 24 Tests, winning 12. In the IPL he won the 2009 title with Deccan Chargers and five titles as Mumbai Indians captain (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020) before Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain in 2024.

Batting Technique
Rohit’s batting rests on timing rather than force. He picks up length early and has more time than most against pace, which allows him to play the pull and hook off the front foot and to clear the ropes without visibly swinging hard. Early in an ODI innings he has traditionally been watchful before accelerating sharply, which is why his centuries so often turned into very big scores. Since 2022 he has largely abandoned that slow start, attacking the new ball from the first over. The main vulnerability across his career has been the full, swinging delivery early on, especially to left-arm pace, and the occasional lbw against balls angling in.
Current Form (2025-26) and Outlook
The BCCI named Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain on 4 October 2025, ending Rohit’s spell in charge, but he stayed in the side as an opener. He was Player of the Series in Australia that month with 202 runs, including 121 in Sydney, and on 29 October 2025 became the top-ranked ODI batter in the ICC rankings for the first time, at 38. In IPL 2026 a hamstring injury cost him matches, though he made 84 off 44 balls against Lucknow Super Giants on his return and Mumbai Indians finished ninth. In July 2026 he scored 138 in the third ODI at Lord’s, a match England won by 27 runs to take the series 2-1. In the home series against West Indies that ended on 3 October he made 225 runs in three innings, including 101 and 92, and passed 10,000 ODI runs as an opener. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, his place in India’s plans is the subject of open debate, and he has said outside noise does not affect his focus.
